NOTE: We uploaded a new version on Nov 18, 2009 with an updated assembly version (0.3, instead of 0.2) and built in release mode. Nothing else was changed.

HiSoftware was primarily focused on educating its community with AKS. Our goal is to be functional. While the Black Band, Blue Band, bla, bla, bla master pages are nice, I can't name one person I've seen actually use them. In this release, we're focusing on building accessible versions of default.master and default.aspx. This should give you an accessible instance of SharePoint with the standard, out-of-the-box look and feel. We consider the *band master pages to be for reference purposes more than actual use. With that said, they are still available.

Install Instructions

Deploy the WSP file either using Central Admin, stsadm, or the PowerShell deployment script
Activate the uAKS Accessibility Overrides site (not site collection) feature to get the accessible default.master and default.aspx
To use the Control Adapters, activate the uAKS Infrastructure web application feature and copy the two .browser files from 12\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\aks-infrastructure to the App_Browsers directory in the IIS root

Additional Notes:

IMPORTANT! The uAKS Accessibility Overrides feature creates a new version of the default.master and a backup of the default.aspx (uaks-default-backup.aspx); however, to restore the original default.master correctly, you will have to manually restore the default.master from the item's version history
The accessible publishing master pages are available by activating the uAKS Accessible Publishing Master Pages site collection feature
We're working on a better solution for this manual control adapter process, but that won't likely be available until 0.4 - Bringing it all Together

Deployment Script

The provided deployment script will retract, delete, re-add, and deploy the uaks.wsp file in the same directory. To fully retract/deploy the solution, provide a URL. To only retract; retract and delete; or retract, delete, and re-add the solution, specify the desired action.

Here, we want to focus on control adapters. This will include a lot of clean up, hopefully some performance improvements, and broader control adapter coverage.

NOTE: We did not make any modifications to the original AKS functionality with this release. Our only goal is to simplify the painful deployment experience.

NOTE: As of this release, HCCE and Size Utility will no longer be included. If you are interested in us maintaining and improving this tool, please let us know.

This release is planned to be our first real effort to bring some synergy to the disparate pieces of the puzzle. We'll deliver one SharePoint solution (WSP) to further simplify the deployment experience and are considering a single-feature approach. We are not completely sold on this, but the idea of only activating one feature to get full compliance is very nice. We also plan to do some code clean up with this release. We don't have any major plans for enhancements to include, but let us know what you'd like to see and we'll do our best to get it in, yet maintain a reasonable release time frame.

NOTE: We decided to break this out from 0.2 - Simplified Deployment to push releases out faster. Let us know if there's something here you feel should be moved up.

This release will simply include HiSoftware AKS 2.0 repackaged as uAKS 0.1. The point of the release is to ensure everyone has immediate, unfiltered access to the existing documentation, source code, and examples created by HiSoftware. If you start with this version, you will likely feel a bit lost in the content. This is due to the unstructured nature of HiSoftware AKS. We will clean it all up in a future release. For the time being, we recommend you start with the Welcome to the Accessibility Kit for SharePoint Release 2.1 document.

If you feel like this is a big jumble of mess, that's because it is. HiSoftware AKS is splattered into one directory, with some outliers in totally different locations, and setup files left on your machine. We decided to break things out here, so you can grab what you want. We recommend starting with the user guide and go from there. To mimic the original AKS install -- except cleaner -- extract each ZIP to the following location:
